As revealed last week, a new character will be replacing Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane at the center of Batwoman… and at the ATX TV From The Couch streaming event, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries talked with fellow showrunner Julie Plec of Legacies fame about the decision… starting with some talk about just getting a new actress to play Kate Kane, a trope seen often in soap operas. Getting a new Kate is what many fans expected the show to do, with many lobbying for Wallis Day (Krypton) to take the role.
“To be honest with you, I did consider the soap opera version for a hot minute, selfishly because we had already a couple of episodes written [with Kate], and transition-wise it would be seamless,” Caroline said.
She did talk about how they came to the decision to create a new character, who casting notices have referred to as “Ryan Wilder,” and it was revealed that super-producer Greg Berlanti also played a part in making that choice.
“Upon further reflection — and Greg helped me make this call, he is way smarter than me about this sort of stuff — he said, you know, we should just reboot the character in terms of reboot Batwoman as a different character, and also respect everything that Ruby put into the Katy Kane character. And I just think it helps the audience a little bit too, that we are not asking them to not address the elephant in the room.”
Is Ryan Wilder a new character? It sounds like it.
“I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun,” Caroline said. Hmm….
Batwoman Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in January 2021 on The CW.
